The production areas of banana and pineapple form large, contiguous cultivation areas. They thus separate natural habitats; for animals and plants they form insurmountable barriers. In the project del Campo al Plato, three new network structures are being created in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, which connect the surrounding natural landscapes and protected areas, as well as water bodies and forests, through the cultivation areas. In this way, the barrier effect of the plantations is weakened, and migration and spreading movements are possible again – an important contribution to the preservation of biological diversity!

The implementation of the interconnecting structures takes place in three steps:

1. The project team of GIZ and GNF, together with local partners, determines the search areas and defines areas, measures and a cost framework for the implementation on site.
2. In the second step, the companies along the value chain of bananas and pineapples are invited to participate in the implementation of the measures and the restoration of the corridors – financially and through practical help.
3. The measures are implemented together and monitored and coordinated by the CAP team.

With the networking corridors Del Campo al Plato offers companies the opportunity to participate directly in the project. Companies along the entire supply chain can implement projects together with their suppliers and other local business partners at the same time and use this implementation in many ways for marketing, communication and other CSR issues.
